Understanding Smarter Travel


The day course provided a robust grounding of travel behaviour and how to elicit behaviour change using a range of techniques commonly referred to as 'Smarter Choices'.  Themes were included where we provided key statistics and facts, creating an evidence base and examples for each.  The evidence base included LSTF projects.  There was a particular focus on Personal Travel Planning, demystifying Intelligent Mobility and consideration of whether the car is sustainable.  A smarter travel surgery sought to address delegates' current issues and problems associated with Active Travel Projects and the Government's Access Fund.

The course was accessible to all levels of experience and the focus of the trainers was on up-skilling each individual to ensure that they have a 'toolset' of information.  Time was provided throughout the day for questions and discussion of learning points.

The course leaders were David Knight (Clarkebond) and Richard Adams (AECOM).  David and Richard have over 40 years experience between them in developing and designing sustainable transport and smarter travel solutions for public and private sector clients.

David Knight is an Associate Director of Clarkebond and a professionally qualified Transport Planner having been one of the first to achieve the CIHT Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification.  He has over 20 years’ experience of developing sustainable transport strategies and solutions including the preparation and delivery of development travel plans for a wide range of development types and land uses. He has contributed to published travel plan guidance and undertaken the audit and review of development travel plans.

Richard Adams is an Associate Director with AECOM, specialising in developing and implementing strategies which influence travel behaviour, primarily through the development and implementation of projects and policy to support positive sustainable travel choices.  He has over 14 years' experience of using these techniques in the public and private sectors and has worked extensively in the development planning context for both private and public sector clients.  For three years Richard reviewed and advised on travel plans submitted to the Highways Agency in South West England as part of the planning process.  He has written and contributed to regional and national guidance on travel planning and the planning process.
